Jason Kunen
Jason grew up in Staten Island, New York, and completed the International Baccalaureate program at Xaverian High School in Brooklyn, NY. He was a long-time swimmer and pianist, and began studying a fusion of several martial arts at age 16 under Grandmaster David Machin, and continued teaching martial arts in his college years.
By his senior year of college, Jason self-published his book, Meditations on Zen and Martial Arts Philosophy, and worked as a editor for the book, Sun Tzu’s The Art of Another War. In 2013, Jason graduated from Haverford College with a B.A. in philosophy and a psychology minor. While there, he worked extensively with his mentor Dr. Ashok Gangadean on global philosophy and East-West Comparative religions.
In the 2015-2016 academic year, Jason joined the Religious Studies & Philosophy department at St. Andrew’s. He is the lead instructor and curriculum designer for the sophomore History of Religious Thought course, and also teaches the upper level philosophy classes Global Wisdom and The Awakened Mind.
Jason lives on Schmolze, where he has served as the dorm parent for junior boys since the 2018-2019 school year. In the spring of 2022, Jason earned a Master of Arts in Liberal Arts degree at St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland. Previously an assistant coach for swimming for several season, Jason began coaching the St. Andrew's Martial Arts program in 2023. In his free time, he practices Brazilian jiu jitsu in Middletown, and also enjoys reading and traveling.
