Pete Delo ’61

 

Pete Delo captained his final flight on September 6, 2018. Always in command he left quickly and with loved ones at his side. He was born in Baltimore, MD, to his B-17 father, Pete Delo Sr. and Penelope Jamison. After the early death of his mother he attended St. Andrew's boarding school in Middletown, DE. Following a year at Boston University he transferred to Colorado University (CU). Pete joined Phi Tau fraternity and met his wife, Sharon Otto Delo, his junior year. They married in 1965. Pete learned to fly at Boulder Airport and enlisted in the Wyoming Air National Guard where he served as a line mechanic. After graduating CU in 1969 he was hired by United Airlines as a pilot. There he updated their training manuals and helped develop safety protocols for which he received many accolades and awards. He served his union (ALPA) as an accident investigator for the NTSB and was at Sioux City, IA; Colorado Springs, CO; and Shanksville, PA. His interest included genealogical research, fishing, and cruise travel. Pete was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Julie and Amy Delo. He is survived by his wife, Sharon; his son, Patrick Worth Delo and grandson, Connor Muir Delo. He is also survived by his stepmother, Agnes Kemp Delo and his brothers Kemp (Mary) and Steve (Debra) and his sister Howie. Pete was a loving husband and devoted father and grandfather. He will be sorely missed. A Celebration of Life to share memories and condolences will be held at Crist Mortuary 3395 Penrose Pl. on Saturday, October 6 at 2:00 pm.
