Fred Carpenter, Former Staff

Fred W. Carpenter, age 79, of Massey, Maryland, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on June 9, 2021.

He was born on October 26, 1941, in Kingston, Pennsylvania, to the late Lloyd Arlie Carpenter and Jennie Fernetta Carpenter.

Fred was a retired Physical Education teacher in the Appoquinimink School District, teaching for 30 years.  During his time in the M.O.T. area he founded and coached the Middletown Wrestling Club in 1975, founded and coached the Middletown Soccer Club in 1978.  He coached the Middletown High School Wrestling team from 1974-1983, he then went on to coach St. Andrew’s School Wrestling from 1983-2018.  He also coached JV baseball at Middletown High School, and St. Andrew’s School Freshman Lacrosse.  Fred was the Founder and Mentor of the Middletown Baseball Card Club, the Cofounder and Director of Camp Appoquinimink at Silver Lake Elementary, and Program Director of the Kent County Parks and Recreation at Redding Middle School.

Outside of the M.O.T. area Fred was involved in coaching and mentoring Team Delaware AAU/USA wrestling from 1982-1987, Faith In Action mentor and Recreation Director of Crystal Beach, Earlville MD, a manager and coach of Millington Warriors Legendary Men’s Fastpitch team, member of the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association and an accomplished scout and outdoorsman.  He also enjoyed donating many holiday meals to the Friendship House in Wilmington, DE.

Fred was preceded in death by his wife Emily Carpenter in 2008.

He is survived by his children, John Carpenter (Dawn), Bill Carpenter (Brenda), and Susan Carpenter.  Three grandchildren, Brittany Carpenter, Thomas Carpenter, and Emma Carpenter, and one great grandchild, Sage Jacobs.  He is also survived by a sister, Lois Sauers (John) and twin brother Frank Carpenter (Barbara), two nieces, Shannon Carpenter and Linda Sauers and six nephews, Matt Sauers, Matt Adamson, John Adamson, Andrew Adamson, Doug Carpenter and Todd Carpenter.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, June 17, 2021, from 10 – 11 am at Connection Community Church, 4744 Summit Bridge Rd., Middletown, DE.  Memorial service will begin at 11 am.  Interment will be private.
