Ellie Washburn

Ellie grew up in Overbrook, Pennsylvania and was educated at Lower Marion High School and Harcum Junior College. She worked for many years in the Alumni Office at St. Andrew’s School, Middletown, Delaware and as the administrative assistant to the Headmaster.

She met her husband, Davis Alexander Washburn, to whom she was married for 54 years on a blind date. They started out their married life at Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania and moved to St. Andrew’s School where they lived and worked for 43 years. Ellie was a gracious hostess to all and she was a stand-in mother to legions of students. One of her favorite remembrances was hosting crew picnics for both the rowers and their parents in the backyard of their campus home. Her impact on students, faculty, trustees and parents was so monumental that many of them were in touch with her throughout her life. Along with her positive spirit and wonderful sense of humor, she always had a kind word for everyone.

Ellie was a talented seamstress and an accomplished quilter. Many people will remember the blazer that she sewed for Dave and the wedding dress that she made for her daughter, Suzy. Having one of the quilts that she made was a special memento for each of her children and grandchildren. She and Dave retired to Union, Maine where Ellie joined several quilting groups. In addition to spending time sewing, Ellie was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood whose primary focus was providing educational opportunities for female students worldwide.

One of Ellie’s greatest sources of joy was her family. Many of her fondest memories were the summers spent with Dave and her children in Friendship, Maine. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren and she often shared stories of what each of them were doing with her friends. She was enormously proud of each and every one of them and they, in turn, loved her with all their hearts.

Ellie is survived by her five children: Peter and his wife, Kit, of Jacksonville, FL; Susan and her husband, Skip Bergmann, of Falmouth, MA; Andrew and his wife, Cathy, of Deer Isle, ME; Thomas and his wife, Lauri, of Bridgton, ME; Janet and her husband, Barry Acker, of Penobscot, ME; 17 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Donations may be made in her memory to St. Andrew’s School, (Middletown, DE), attn: Davis A. Washburn Fund for Noxontown Pond, or to P.E.O. International (https://www.peointernational.org/contributions-peo- foundation).
