Jacob Myers

“Coaching is a way to teach someone to be humble and strong all at the same time. I love working closely with my athletes to inspire them to do things that they didn’t think they could do . . . “ Lou Berl, Class of 1984

Lou O’Brien Berl ’84 was a 3-sport captain in field hockey, squash and crew, winner of the Brownlee Crew Award, a senior prefect, and recipient of the Malcolm Ford Award during her time at St. Andrew’s School. After an incredible rowing career at Trinity College, Lou decided to enter the coaching world and hasn’t looked back! She has coached at both the high school and college levels, leading programs like the University of Virginia and Ohio State University. In 2014, while serving as the head coach of the Women’s Lightweight squad at Harvard University, she led the team to an undefeated season, won the IRA National Championship and was selected as Women’s Lightweight Coach of the Year. She returned to St. Andrew’s in the summer of 2015 and currently serves as an Associate Director of Admission and leads the Women’s crew program.

On our latest episode of The Saints Spotlight Podcast, Lou Berl talks to us about her love for crew, her decision to leave Harvard to serve the SAS community and what it’s been like to share the SAS experience with her daughters. Link below for full conversation.
