Ann Wardwell Appointed New Chief Advancement Officer
Liz Torrey

Earlier today, Head of School Joy McGrath ’92 announced to the community that Ann Wardwell has been appointed as St. Andrew’s chief advancement officer, effective July 1, 2022.

As chief advancement officer, Ann will lead the school’s Advancement Office, will manage and oversee all aspects of the school’s fundraising activities and constituent relations, and will work closely with the board of trustees, alumni, parents, faculty, and leadership in setting and accomplishing the school’s strategic fundraising goals. A priority of the school’s fundraising efforts in the near term is to increase the size of the endowment so that St. Andrew’s can meet its mission to provide an exceptional boarding school education to students from every background, regardless of their family’s financial means. Support for our faculty, including endowed chairs and funding for faculty housing, is another key priority. The Saints Fund, which provides largely unrestricted funds to support St. Andrew’s mission each year, is also a critical source of support and area of special focus. Ann will be leading the effort to engage parents, alumni, and our entire community in achieving these goals.

Ann brings St. Andrew’s with a wealth of experience in advancement leadership, strategic planning, organizational development, and marketing and communications. She currently serves as the chief advancement officer at Hong Kong International School in Hong Kong, China, where she has lived and worked since 2019. Prior to joining HKIS, Ann served as chief advancement officer at Fay School in Southborough, Massachusetts; director of advancement at Governor’s Academy in Byfield, Massachusetts; and director of development at Choate Rosemary Hall. Earlier in her career, Ann held various fundraising and management positions at the Children’s Hospital of Boston, American Express, and Marriott.

“I have often heard how wonderful St. Andrew’s is from a former colleague who is the mother of three St. Andrew's alumnae,” Ann said, “so when Deerfield Associates contacted me about the chief advancement officer position, I was thrilled. As I went through the interview process and learned more about the school’s challenging academic program and commitment to financial aid, diversity, and sustainability, I became more and more excited about the prospect of joining Joy McGrath and her leadership team. I am truly grateful to have this opportunity and am looking forward to working with so many dedicated professionals to advance the mission of this remarkable school. My chief areas of focus will be on keeping the school’s vast community connected, creating a firm foundation of support for the school, and working with Joy and others to raise the money needed to ensure St. Andrew’s extraordinary commitment to financial aid is secure for generations to come.”

“Mrs. Wardwell is a great asset to not only efforts in advancement, but also a valued member of our leadership team,” said HKIS Head of School Ron Roukema. “She brings to any school years of successful experience in fundraising, communication, and school operations.”

Joy wrote in her announcement to the school: “I am looking forward to introducing Ann to the St. Andrew’s community in person. She stood out as a strategic and authentic leader who understood the spirit that animates St. Andrew’s and who could immediately articulate the case for support for our special mission. Her grasp of the fundamentals of the work of institutional advancement impressed all who met her, and she will be a magnificent leader for our dedicated and capable team in the Advancement Office.”

Ann was identified as St. Andrew’s next advancement leader from a field of outstanding candidates in an exhaustive international search conducted by Deerfield Associates. She succeeds Will Mitchell P’21,’21 as chief advancement officer (the position was formerly titled director of advancement). Will Mitchell left St. Andrew’s in June 2020 to serve as director of advancement at Pomfret School; Bernice Whaley has led St. Andrew’s Advancement Office in the interim. Following Ann’s appointment, Bernice will continue in her role as director of development for St. Andrew’s.
