Coach Will Porter
Will Porter ‘96 began his career as a coxswain at St. Andrew’s, where he was a two-sport varsity captain in his senior year, and won the Warwick Crew Prize. He went on to cox at Cornell for another four years on the men’s heavyweight team. In his first three seasons of coaching at the Hun School, where he coached varsity girls rowing, his team won two silver medals at Stotesbury, two Philadelphia Championships, and three New Jersey Scholastic Championships. In his next five years of coaching at St. Mark’s in Massachusetts, his varsity boys rowing team had a record of 96-50 and were three-time finalists at The New England Interscholastic Regatta.
In 2010, he returned to SAS to serve as an assistant coach to legendary St. Andrew’s rowing coach Lindsay Brown for six years before taking over as head coach in 2017. Many of his former rowers have competed at both Division I and Division III programs, including Princeton, Yale, Penn, Columbia, Georgetown, Wisconsin, Navy, Colby, Bates, Hobart, Wesleyan, and Washington College. A few rowers have even been captains at these programs. In addition to coaching rowing, Will teaches 9th, 11th, and 12th grade English.
