Deriba was born and raised in Ethiopia. After high school, he moved to California to attend Pacific Union College, where he majored in chemistry. Deriba later attended Harvard for graduate studies in applied physics and history of science.

Beyond academics, Deriba likes to keep up with geopolitical trends. He also appreciates music, and especially enjoy sacred classical music.
