The St. Andrew’s boys varsity basketball team upset #15 Smyrna High School on Tuesday evening in the first round of the DIAA State Tournament, defeating the Eagles 66-57. The Saints, up 20-19 at halftime, extended their lead to double digits in the third quarter by going on a 17-3 run. In this scoring outburst, Frankie Koblish ’22 continued to prove himself as one of the top sharpshooters in the State of Delaware, sinking three consecutive three-point field goals to help the Saints take a 37-22 lead. While the Eagles continued to fight and claw their way back throughout the second half, the deficit ultimately proved to be insurmountable as the Saints high-pressure zone defense recorded key stops when they needed them most.
Koblish and Brandon Graves ’22 led the Saints with 17 points apiece while Lamar Duncan ’20 and Adrian Watts ’20 added 14 and 13, respectively. The 15-6 Saints will now play in the second round of the DIAA State Tournament for the first time since 2013 on Thursday evening at William Penn High School. They will take on the 2nd-seeded Colonials at 7:00 p.m.
