Aaron Barnes is a founding member and serves as senior managing director at Newmarket. Newmarket was launched in 2020 and manages capital on behalf of institutional investors worldwide, targeting investments in structured opportunities sourced from a global network of banks and financial institutions. Aaron’s primary responsibilities are related to leading the team’s underwriting activities and firm operations.

Prior to founding Newmarket, Aaron served as managing director at Mariner Investment Group, which he joined in 2012 pursuant to co-founding the International Infrastructure Finance Company Fund investment platform. Prior to Mariner, Aaron served as vice president of project finance and legal at Tangent Energy Solutions, a behind-the-meter photovoltaic solar energy generation development company; and PPM Energy, where he led the company’s wind power development activities in New England and Pennsylvania. Additionally, Aaron was an attorney with Freshfields, Bruckhaus, Deringer, and senior corporate counsel at CMS Energy UK, Ltd. Earlier in his career, Aaron was assistant vice president in ABN AMRO’s Structured Trade Finance Group.

Aaron graduated with a BBA in finance from Howard University in 1988. He then attended Georgetown University Law Center where he obtained his JD in 1994.

Aaron has two children, Luke ’21 and Satchel ’24.
