Environmental Sustainability
Operational Green Initiatives
After you have exhausted what there is in business, politics, conviviality, and so on—have found that none of these finally satisfy, or permanently wear—what remains? Nature remains.
— Walt Whitman
Over the past several years, St. Andrews has taken enormous steps towards sustainable living in its facilities and operations.
- The School has replaced all incandescent bulbs with fluorescents in all classrooms, corridors and bathrooms.
- Motion sensors have been installed in some of the halls and bathrooms to ensure energy conservation.
- Facilities department has switched to biodiesel for their tractors, buses and two other transportation vehicles.
- A vending Miser has been installed on the soda machine in Founders Hall, to minimize the energy usage.
- Housekeeping has switched to green cleaning products and recycled toiletries.
- The publications program has shifted to papers with the maximum possible post consumer recycled content. News and updates from departments, like college counseling, which used to involve hundreds of pounds of paper mailings, are now distributed to parents online.
These steps have allowed us to significantly reduce the amount of carbon we are emitting, not to mention saving trees and reducing the amount of pollution entering our water!
