John Austin appointed as Headmaster of King's Academy

Posted February 3, 2010

In 1979, Abdullah the eldest son of King Hussein of Jordan graduated from Deerfield Academy with a deep appreciation for his experience as a student at a great American boarding school. In 1999, his father named him his heir to the throne, and soon Abdullah became King of Jordan.

As a leader deeply committed to education and a vision of peace in the Middle East and the world, the King in 2000 made the dramatic decision to found a boarding school in Jordan, and soon King’s Academy was born. Its vision statement reads:

King’s Academy, an independent coeducational boarding and day school, will provide outstanding young men and women from Jordan, the Middle East and beyond an educational experience unlike any available in the region.

Eric Widmer served as the school’s founding Headmaster, and in July 2010, he will retire after guiding the school through its important formative years.

Following a worldwide search for a new leader, King’s Academy’s Board of Trustees announced this morning that St. Andrew’s Academic Dean John Austin has been appointed as the school’s new Headmaster.

All of us here at St. Andrew’s celebrate this appointment and look forward to our close relationship with King’s Academy in the years to come.
