DISC Champions! Football Finishes Season on Seven-Game Win Streak, Defeat Tatnall in Cannon Game 45-14 (Boys Varsity Football)

Posted November 13, 2011

The Cannon is back! In front of a spirited Homecoming crowd, the St. Andrew's football team put on a show, dismantling a talented Tatnall team by the score of 45-14. The Saints dominated play for the first three quarters, leading 24-0 at halftime, and 31-0 late in the third quarter. Led by a signature performance from sophomore running back, Austin Tilghman, the Saints offense pounded the Tatnall defense to the tune of 342 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Tilghman rushed the ball 30 times for 195 yards and five touchdowns (and a 2 point conversion). Tilghman tied a school record with his 5 touchdown runs. Jake Myers added 23 carries for 115 yards and 43 yard touchdown run.

An inspired Saints defense set the tone on Saturday, halting Tatnall's vaunted passing attack with sound coverage and an aggressive pass rush. Tatnall never got in rhythm thanks in part to a swarming Saint Andrew's defense. Jake Myers led the charge with 8 tackles and an interception, ending his senior season with a school record 132 tackles in 9 games. Senior linebacker Mason Leonard played like a man possessed, finishing the game with 7 tackles and a ridiculous diving interception at the end of the first half. Junior noseguard Sterling Cousar finished the season with a school record seven sacks.

After an 0-2 start to the season, the Saints rebounded to win their final seven games, to finish up 7-2. Thanks in large part to the remarkable leadership of the senior class, this team took home the Independent Conference crown by defeating Tower Hill, Wilmington Friends (twice!) and Tatnall. The 2011 St. Andrew's football team accomplished what they set out to do this season: win the conference championship and take back the Cannon.
