Athletics

Why New Athletic Facilities?

Despite important upgrades over the years, our winter sports facilities for basketball, squash and wrestling remained largely unchanged since the construction of the “new gym” in 1961. At the same time, the student body population has almost doubled to its current size of 295. During the dark days of winter, when exercise and athletic engagement are most critical, our limited facilities make sustained participation difficult. Teams are forced to practice in the evenings and inexperienced athletes don’t get the court time needed to develop their skills. Prospective students with deep interest in winter sports saw our weakness in facilities as a sign that St. Andrew’s may not be athletically competitive.

The master plan for athletics takes a bold and dramatic approach to address these shortcomings, and the result will be an exciting and compelling sports program for current and prospective students.

As an athlete, coach and Headmaster, I firmly believe that athletics provide a unique foundation for the cultivation of skills that are essential to leadership: the ability to be collaborative, to rise to challenges courageously and to compete ethically. Throughout our history, St. Andrew's has celebrated the power of sports to teach these life-long values. Now we must develop the facilities that will enable us to realize our vision of athletics at St. Andrew's in the 21st century.
