The St. Andrew's boys cross country team got their season off to a fine start on Saturday morning at the 60th annual Lake Forest Cross Country Festival in Felton, Delaware.
Racing against about twenty other high school from Delaware, Maryland and Washington, D.C., the Saints took first place as a team in both the varsity and JV races. "To the best of my knowledge," said Head Coach Dan O'Connell, "this is the first time in school history that our boys have won either the varsity of JV race at this historic meet."
The following runners were awarded medal for finishing in the top 15 in the Varsity race:
Alex Horgan '18 (16:52), Tad Scheibe '19 (17:27), Alec Barreto '18 (17:31), Blake Hundley '20 (17:32), Carson McCoy '19 '(17:53), and Augie Segger '19 (18:15).
The varsity team time, 17:27, is the second fastest team performance in school history on this course. This comparison includes more than twenty end-of-season state championship races run on this course.
All six of the SAS runners entered in the JV race medaled. These runners were: Will Gray '18, Christian Doucette '18, Dylan Torrance '18, James Doucette '18, Xander Atalay '19 and Ben Covell '18. The JV team score of 21 points was an exceptionally strong performance. The varsity team score was 29 points.
Individually, Will Gray (who finished in 2nd place overall in the JV race) and Alec Barreto ran personal best times. Blake Hundley and Tad Schiebe were only seconds off their best times.
"It was an exciting way to start the season of competition," O'Connell said."
